Richards Mercantile is taking shape inside one of Downtown Dover’s most familiar historic buildings, a place that has witnessed the town change, grow, and reinvent itself for generations.

Today, that history is becoming the setting for something new: a multi-merchant marketplace designed to bring independent businesses, uncommon goods, culture, and community together under one roof.

The oldest portion of the Richards Building dates to the 1880s and was built by George Richards, Dover’s first mayor and a prominent local industrialist.     

Over the years, the building has served many roles in the life of Downtown Dover, including housing retail businesses, offices, educational uses, and other community institutions.     

Its story reflects the story of Dover itself.

Dover first grew as an iron and steel town in the late nineteenth century, later becoming a regional commercial hub during the middle of the twentieth century.   

In more recent decades, Dover has become a vibrant center of Hispanic culture, bringing new traditions, businesses, and energy to the community.

Richards Mercantile is designed to recognize all of those chapters, honoring the town’s past while celebrating the diverse community that defines Dover today.

At its heart, Richards Mercantile is a multi-vendor retail concept built around independent entrepreneurs and a shared shopping experience. The goal is to create one cohesive, well-organized shopping experience rather than a collection of individual booths.

Customers will discover an evolving mix of uncommon items for sale, including handcrafted, vintage, imported, and hard-to-find goods, all presented within a welcoming and thoughtfully curated environment.
